Brave Space To Talk About Racism

As part of our action plan for equality we have started our series of Brave Space webinars. We had our first one last week, and it was a big success. The reason I know it was a success is because we surveyed attendees before and after the webinar.
I hosted the webinar with two special guests Lakeesha Eure (Director, Office of Violence Prevention Department of Health and Community Wellness, Newark N.J.) and Raina N Whitfield (Director of Talent Management and Culture at TransPerfect in New York City).
The goal of our Brave Space webinar is to provide you with the knowledge and vocabulary you need to confidently talk about racism. By boosting your knowledge you’ll be more informed and able to contribute to conversations without inadvertently offending or being patronizing.
These webinars will be particularly useful for people that feel any kind of nervousness when talking about racism.
What you can expect if you attend? During a Brave Space webinar you will experience very open and very candid conversations about important related black history, the questions people are scared to ask, the right and wrong things to say, and how you can play an important part in building a future free of racism.
Some of the questions that were raised during the first webinar included the following.
- When is it okay to refer to someone as Brown or Black, or African American?
- What does white privilege actually mean?
- Why is it offensive to black people when people say All Lives Matter in the context of Black Lives Matter?
- What does BIPOC mean?
- What can I do to help the Black Lives Matter human rights campaign?
